AREAS AFFECTED: Alexander, IL; Pulaski, IL; Ballard, KY; Carlisle, KY; Fulton, KY; Hickman, KY; Mississippi, MO

DESCRIPTION: ...Forecast flooding changed from Moderate to Major severity and increased in duration for the following rivers in Missouri... Kentucky...Illinois... Ohio River at Cairo affecting Hickman, Ballard, Alexander, Pulaski, Mississippi, Carlisle and Fulton Counties. Ohio River at Smithland Dam affecting Pope and Livingston Counties. .A couple more rounds of moderate to heavy rain can be expected into the weekend. The rest of the event rainfall has been incorporated into the river forecast. The Ohio River has started to rise and crests are expected over the next week and a half. Now is the time to prepare for flooding. * WHAT...Major flooding is forecast. * WHERE...Ohio River at Cairo. * WHEN...From Saturday morning until further notice. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 11:00 AM CDT Friday the stage was 35.6 feet. - Forecast...The river is expected to rise above flood stage late tomorrow morning and continue rising to a crest of 53.0 feet Friday, April 11. - Flood stage is 40.0 feet. - Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of 53.0 feet on 05/30/1943.

INSTRUCTION: Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks. Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas. Additional information is available at www.weather.gov.

A shelf cloud is similar to a wall cloud, but forms at the front of a storm cloud, instead of at the rear, where wall clouds form.

A shelf cloud is caused by a series of events set into motion by the advancing storm; first, cool air settles along the ground where precipitation has just fallen. As the cool air is brought in, the warmer air is displaced, and rises above it, because it is less dense. When the warmer air reaches the bottom of the storm cloud, it begins to cool again, and the resulting condensation is a visible shelf cloud.

Snow is precipitation taking the form of ice crystals. Each ice crystal, or snowflake, has unique characteristics, but all of them grow in a hexagonal structure. Snowfall can last for sustained periods of time and result in significant buildup of snow on the ground.

On the earth's surface, snow starts out light and powdery, but as it begins to melt it tends to become more granular, producing small bits of ice which have the consistency of sand. After several cycles of melting and freezing, snow can become very dense and ice-like, commonly known as snow pack.
